MERTHYR TYDFIL
The food anxiety situation in Merthyr Tydfil is exacerbated by rising food prices and the ongoing energy crisis. The research by Miller Research, commissioned by Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council, found thatover 50% of Lower Super Output Areas (LSOAs) in Merthyr Tydfil could be categorized as ‘medium tohigh risk’ or ‘high risk’ of food insecurity. This has led to widespread experiences of food shopping cost, increases and anxieties related to accessing and affording food. The research also highlighted the impact of the energy crisis on food choices and the availability of affordable, healthy food options.
To address these issues, the community is encouraged to support local food banks and food poverty strategies, such as the Merthyr Cynon Foodbank and the Food Prosperity Network. These initiatives aim to provide emergency food and support for those in crisis, as well as to develop strategies to reduce food poverty and improve the local food system. For those facing food insecurity, the Community Food Pantry in Gellideg offers a self-selecting and deselecting process that allows members to choose their own produce, providing subsidized food while expressing personal preferences.
The pantry is open two days a week for 47 weeks of the year and provides emergency food and toiletries for anyone in need. It is important for the community to recognize existing assets and work together to build resilience and establish a food system that is less vulnerable to external factors.
